Kiki's Blankieby Janie Bynum. Kiki's polka dot blankie is her constant companion. When she needs something as special as a flying cape or something as mundane as a napkin, her blue blankie is right there for her. But one day the wind snatches away her blankie and seems to also steal her imagination because she can't seem to figure out how to retrieve the blankie/napkin/cape/tent stuck on a branch right above a crocodile. That is until she imagines the crocodile eating her blankie. Bright simple illustrations and text as well as a lovable character make this a fun book for the very young.~Patti

First published in hardcover in 1996, Mother Goose is illustrated by sixteen different artists who donated their art as a fundraiser for Parent-Child Mother Goose Program, a parenting program in Canada. Now in a board book format, just a little bit oversized, this is a terrific addition to the silly- rhyme bookshelf. I also appreciate the opportunity to discover new artists and a collection like this makes a perfect introduction.~Patti

On July 20, 1969, the world witnessed the landing of the "Eagle" on the moon -- the very first moon landing ever. Back on Earth, in the small town of Star, a group of school-age children sit in eager anticipation of the landing. The Moon Over Star captures the excitement and awe felt by all people -- children and adults alike, but mostly it radiates the sense felt by everyone that "anything is possible." Mae and her cousins are so excited they build their own backyard spaceship from scraps found in the barn. In crisp, lyrical writing Aston recounts the actual landing as reported by Walter Cronkite, while telling the gentle relationship between Mae and her Gramps, who isn't such a believer in the space program, at least until Mae helps him to see the possibilities ahead. Jerry Pinkney, award winning children's book artist, brings the story to life with rich, vibrant illustrations. This is a perfect book to commemorate the upcoming 40th anniversary of the Moon landing. ~Wendee

One Rainy Day by M. Christina Butler. One of my favorite holiday books last December was One Snowy Night by the same author and illustrator. Now Little Hedgehog is back in a perfect spring story. Little Hedgehog has brand new rain gear to try out and is very excited when he awakens to the sound of raindrops. After putting on his boots, coat and hat and opening up his shiny umbrella, Little Hedgehog goes out to splash and explore. But everywhere he goes he runs into friends who need the help of Little Hedgehog and his umbrella. Tina Macnaughton's illustrations are filled with detail and the muted colors of a rainy day. Lovely. ~Patti

To say that this book is almost as good as its partner, The Black Book of Secrets, is high praise because that is one of the best children's books I've read in years. The Bone Magician is a paraquel (maybe a made-up word) to The Black Book of Secrets which means they take place at the same time. Pin Carpue lives in the same dirty, twisted-Dickens old city that Ludlow Finch fled from in the first book. Pin is making his way on his own after his mother dies and his father goes into hiding (maybe he killed someone, maybe not). Though the story is great, it's the atmosphere, the world, that Higgins has created that really makes these books exceptional. I can picture the dingy streets of Urbs Umida, smell the stench of the River Foedus, and I got shivers when Pin had to hide from a crazy man in an over-sized coffin. I haven't even mentioned the Bone Magician of the title yet! And, oh my, the ending! Like The Black Book of Secrets this is probably best for ages 10 and up. ~Lillian

As a parent myself, I know nothing is more valuable than a children’s book that can be enjoyed not only by the little one but also by the adult who is reading the book for the hundredth time!  The Great Paper Caper is one of those rare finds.  The book made me laugh out loud and while my daughter is now too old for it, I look forward to reading it to my niece and nephew.  When the creatures of the forest notice that their trees are missing branches, they organize themselves to find out who could be taking the limbs.  A comical investigation ensues, ending with messages of forgiveness and ecological responsibility.  The illustrations are charming and unique, and there is plenty to look at on every page.  There are also instructions for making some great paper airplanes.  Jeffers has delivered a fun, smart, and thoroughly enjoyable read!  ~Torrie

When Royals Wore Ruffles is an absolute must alphabet book for any young girl with fashionable taste! A funny and charming way to learn about history of fashion, including all the crazy trends like corsets and bustles, and how the little black dress came to be. This is a fun read with wonderful illustrations, and with the message that style is not how you are dressed "It's the spring in your step and your turned-up nose. Attitude!" Recommended for ages 5-9, or any fashionista. ~Mara

This book had all I was craving: a great narrator, a fun mystery, delightful friendships, and puzzles that I could solve along with the characters.

The Red Blazer Girls are Sophie, our very honest (and very funny) narrator, and her friends Margaret and Rebecca. They are seventh graders at St. Veronica's, a New York City all-girls' private school. The red blazers are their school uniform and help get them into their big adventure... One day in English class as they're reading Great Expectations, Sophie spots a haunting face worthy of Dickens himself in a window across the way. Investigation leads to Ms. Harriman, a lonely neighbor whose daughter, Caroline, was a Red Blazer/St. V's Girl herself 20 years earlier. The girls' polite visit puts them on the path to a grand scavenger hunt: Ms. Harriman has just discovered a clue Caroline's grandfather had left for her on her 14th birthday two decades ago -- a letter hinting at another clue hidden in the school library and a promise of a "gift of rare and precious beauty." How can they resist a challenge like that?

Sophie and her friends are good students and good people, and even though the book is very exciting, it all felt very realistic. I loved that the girls actually do homework and study in the midst of all this treasure-hunting excitement. (But believe me-- that doesn't slow the pace!) They combine their strengths to find the clues and outwit potential evil masterminds while they're dealing with the kind of things all seventh graders worry about: tests, dances and boys. The result is a super-entertaining, extremely satisfying novel perfect for fans of mysteries and fans of funny books about real-life challenges. ~Tegan

If you think you've been there and done that with children's books that encourage kids to be who they are, be prepared for a ninja-strike of surprise to your funny bone with Wink! The title character cavorts through the book's bold collage-like illustrations with an attention-getting energy that perfectly reflects his "problem:" Wink is a ninja-in-training at the traditional Summer Moon School for Young Ninjas, but despite his supreme efforts to follow the stealthy path of the ninja, he cannot reconcile himself to a life in the shadows. Wink's dear Grandmother counters Master Zutzu's strict teachings with her own fortune-cookie-like pronouncements about finding happiness and being true to one's nature. Wink never gives up, but he finds that his talents suit him for a different calling-- one in which he can be celebrated for who he is. I have a feeling this will wind up on many adult's bookshelves, too, as a fun and beautiful reminder to follow your heart, even if it leads to unexpected places, and revel in individuality in all its unexpected glory. ~Tegan

Humiliated and discouraged after his fall from the wall, Humpty Dumpty retreats to the safety of his living room to watch TV in his underwear. A visit from the dish and the spoon does nothing to cheer him, but when he's scared into the street by a spider he heads for the hills and becomes a hero after rescuing one of the King's horses from a mountain ledge.

Simple, silly illustrations and familiar rhymes make this "fractured fairy tale" a lot of fun to read. ~Anne
