I’m a sucker for an atmospheric World War II mystery; add in a little romance and suspense and I am happily transported to the war-torn fields of just about anywhere. Mark Mills’ latest book, The Information Officer, is exactly the kind of story that completely charms me even while the bombs are going off and the side characters are dying.
The main character, Max, is the Information Officer on Malta. He is essentially a propaganda artist except that propaganda is what the enemy employs; Max broadcasts a careful selection of the news. When he discovers that young, Maltese women are being killed he suspects it’s by an English serviceman. The news could break the spirit of the already beleaguered Maltese citizens at a critical point in the war, so Max embarks on a clandestine search for the killer before any gruesome details can reach the public.
I was fascinated by the details of life on Malta during what was basically a siege, by the relationships, and by the mystery. This is a great read. ~Lillian
