Saturday November 14 and Sunday November 15, Queen Anne Books will participate in the Upper Queen Anne Merchants Association "Shop Local for Schools" event. Buy things at participating merchants (displaying the sign shown on the UQAMA site here), and 10% of your purchase will go to the local school of your choice.
Queen Anne Books will also be holding a McClure Benefit Book Fair starting at 3:00 on Sunday November 15. For more information about McClure's Book Fair, click here.
Book Mixer meets a earlier in the month than usual because of the Thanksgiving holiday.
Get in that "Happy Family" mood by discussing Pharmakon, or the Story of a Happy Family by Dirk Wittenborn.
We meet every other month, usually the last Saturday at 8:00pm.
Our book choices tend to be a little edgier than the traditional book
club fare, and our discussions are focused yet fun. After about an hour
talking about the book, most of us head to a bar or restaurant to
socialize. This helps us spend our book club time talking openly and
in-depth about the book, then gives us a great opportunity to bond with
fellow readers afterwards.
Everyone is welcome to take part in the discussion, and all are
encouraged to join us for social time after, too. Remember, they're
Saturday nights starting at 8:00.

For this food-loving novel, I thought we'd offer something a little extra: you can buy a VIP ticket for $18 which includes a paperback copy of The School of Essential Ingredients (signed and personalized by the author the night of the event, of course!) and a pre-signing tasting reception with the author, featuring sumptuous nibbles from Eat Local. The VIP event starts at 6:00. Tickets are limited and will be on sale at the store (or over the phone) through closing on Thursday January 14.
If you can't make it to the VIP tasting at 6:00, please join us at 6:30 for our no-reservations-required reading and signing with Erica Bauermeister. This portion of the evening is free and open to the public. Erica will read from her novel, which is centered around a cooking class. Savor her evocative taste descriptions and richly-created characters! The reading will be followed by a question and answer session and a signing, when the author will autograph copies of her book.

As a relative newcomer to Seattle, I hadn't heard of the Love Israel Family, but as soon as I heard this book published by the University of Washington Press, I started hearing about people's memories of the commune, which at one point had its headquarters on Queen Anne.
Whether the Love Israel Family is a blast from your past or something new to learn about local history, our event will give you the opportunity to meet author Charles LeWarne and find out more about this fascinating piece of Seattle history.
Join us for a free reading, question and answer session with the author, and signing.

The River Why by David James Duncan
February 9 – March 7, 2010
Young
Gus leaves his quirky, fishing-obsessed family to search for his own
truth. With every cast of his pole, the Zen-like repetition of his
angling activities leads him on a journey of self discovery. Set in the
Pacific Northwest, audiences will at once feel kinship with Gus and his
burgeoning concerns for stewardship of the land we live upon and the
rivers that sustain us.
Whole Foods in Interbay welcomes Queen Anne Books for read-aloud for little ones and their grown-ups. Why not treat yourself to a few good picture books when you pick up your groceries?
Mary from Whole Foods provides us with a bright but cozy space-- the Chill Lounge-- and fresh, wholesome treats. (Last time we had chocolate Mighty-O mini donuts and fresh strawberries-- yum!) Tegan picks a few books to share and reads aloud.
